APPROACH investigators present their research at OARSI 2023
The 2023 edition of the OARSI (Osteoarthritis Research Society International) world congress was organised on March 17th - 20th, in Denver, Colorado, the USA. The topic for this year’s congress was “Challenges ahead in osteoarthritis research”. -

The APPROACH consortium publishes a final project report reflecting on its scientific and technical results, the potential impact and exploitation of these results, as well as the lessons learned and further opportunities for research in the field of osteoarthritis. -
APPROACH researchers find strong indications for differential phenotypes in osteoarthritis
Using clustering algorithms and explainable AI techniques on biomarkers, APPROACH researchers found that osteoarthritis (OA) patients can be divided into three dominant subgroups: inflammatory, low-repair and subchondral bone/articular cartilage-driven phenotypes. Patients in the discovered subgroups had statistically significant differences in clinical characteristics. -
Thesis Eefje van Helvoort: towards a more personalized approach for OA phenotypes
On March 15, APPROACH researcher Eefje van Helvoort successfully defended her thesis on ostheoarthritis. ‘The ultimate goal is to find treatments more tailor-made to an individual patient’s needs.’ -

APPROACH series of videos explain the research in the clinical study, its preliminary results and patient council experiences in the project
Are we able to predict the progression of osteoarthritis? The APPROACH consortium publishes a series of videos elaborating on this and other topics such as the biomarker analysis and computer algorithm used in the project, the role of MRI scans and the use of the GaitSmart system to measure participants’ gait, among others. -
Final APPROACH consortium meeting gathers over 50 project members to discuss the results from their research and the way forward
Over 50 members of the APPROACH consortium from 22 partner organisations participated in the last consortium meeting entitled “Celebrating successes from APPROACH: the way forward”. The meeting was organised as a hybrid event in Zeist, The Netherlands between the 8th-10th of November. -
