APPROACH investigators present their research at OARSI 2023
The 2023 edition of the OARSI (Osteoarthritis Research Society International) world congress was organised on March 17th - 20th, in Denver, Colorado, the USA. The topic for this year’s congress was “Challenges ahead in osteoarthritis research”. At the conference, APPROACH investigators Mylene Jansen (UMC Utrecht), Frank Roemer (Erlangen University) and Wolfgang Wirth (Chondrometrics) presented their research on the APPROACH clinical study. Moreover, OARSI 2023 allowed them to meet with other APPROACH researchers and discuss further opportunities for collaboration.
About the speakers
Dr. Mylène Jansen works as an Assistant Professor at the department of rheumatology at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU), The Netherlands. “I participated in OARSI 2023 to learn about the latest steps that have been made in the field of osteoarthritis research, but also to catch up with colleagues from all across the world and discuss (new) collaborations”, says Dr. Jansen on her motivation to participate in the OARSI congress. “Participation in the APPROACH consortium has made meetings like the OARSI even more interesting. It is great to see that so many different researchers collaborated on APPROACH and can use events such as these to stay connected and discuss further opportunities even if the APPROACH study has officially ended. My APPROACH poster of this year is actually a great example of this. It is actually the result of a discussion we had at OARSI 2022 last year. It is also nice to see the APPROACH study is becoming more known to others, as more and more publications and presentations arise from it.”
Dr. Frank Roemer is an Adjunct Professor at Boston University School of Medicine and a Professor of Radiology at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. On his participation in the OARSI conference as part of the APPROACH consortium, Dr. Roemer comments: “As an OA researcher with a focus on imaging, OARSI is a must-go meeting. I have participated without interruption since 2007 (apart from the years during the COVID pandemic when we met online). I find the interdisciplinary discussions during this event extremely helpful. The podium sessions stimulate ideas beyond your own field of interest and expertise. Furthermore, it was also great to be together again with the rest of APPROACH’s consortium members who attended the congress! Despite APPROACH having formally come to end, the current times are exciting because we focus on really understanding the data that was accumulated during the previous years.”
Dr. Wolfgang Wirth is a Software Developer, Quality Manager, and Data Base Manager at Chondrometrics.
APPROACH poster sessions
There were a lot of stimulating discussions around the APPROACH poster sessions organized at OARSI 2023.
“The participants found my presentation very interesting. In fact, the same study that I presented at OARSI 2023 has been accepted for a poster tour presentation at the next conference of the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology to take place between 31st May - 3rd June 2023 in Milan, Italy” – Dr. Jansen comments.

“These discussions are useful in stimulating and developing one’s own ideas and research endeavors.”, Dr. Roemer explains. “My poster was based on the APPROACH imaging data and focused on the impact of subchondral bone marrow lesions on quantitatively assessed cartilage loss. As bone marrow lesions are fluctuating structural features of osteoarthritis, they are an interesting treatment target. Change in bone marrow lesion size may also affect the rate of cartilage loss. My presentation was well received and because of these discussion we decided to expand our analysis to possibly gain a better understanding of the association between bone marrow changes and cartilage damage.”

The audience
OARSI 2023 was attended by 700+ participants from all over the world. OARSI attendees reflect a spectrum of researchers across different disciplines, ranging from basic science, to epidemiology, rheumatology, radiology and increasingly more informaticians.
About the event
The annual OARSI world congress is a multidisciplinary global forum for all parties across the globe interested in innovative research in the field of osteoarthritis from academia and industry. Among the participants in the congress are clinical research scientists, radiologists, physiatrists, physical therapists, rheumatologists, orthopaedic surgeons, methodologists, various health professionals with different backgrounds, as well as policy makers and other professionals.
The OARSI world congress provides a platform for researchers in osteoarthritis to connect over novel research and updates thereof, to discuss best practices and exchange experiences.
